Context

With stroke the third leading cause of death and a significant cause of disability in Malawi, it is critical to develop an organization that will speak collectively on behalf of people with stroke and their families and advocate for them at all levels of the community. Its broad goal is to improve the living conditions of persons with stroke by reducing its negative impact on individuals, their families and the wider society.

The organization works through the united effort of people living with stroke, their guardians, spouses, and professionals – physiotherapists, physicians, nurses, other care providers, attorneys, and rights activists. SSO fulfils its mandate through information and advice dissemination to people with stroke; peer support, family counselling, rehabilitation therapy, and welfare services.

SSO aspires to engage in wider- improving the living conditions of persons with stroke by reducing its negative impact on individuals, their families and the wider society. Ranging activities such as awareness campaigning, prevention screening, lobbying for better services and funding or facilitating stroke research are proposed.

SSO will achieve its vision and mission by offering information and advice to individuals living with stroke, providing peer support, family counselling, making referrals for rehabilitation therapy or welfare services, running awareness campaigns, prevention screening, lobbying governmental & nongovernmental organizations for better services, and advocating for stroke research.
